My friends 2017 MacBook Pro (non touch bar base model) screen goes black after about 30 mins of usage.
The computer is still on and functional just the screen is black. Restarting doesn't fix the issue, but shuting it down and after about 3 hours or so it'll work for another 25 to 30 mins approx and same cycle repeats.
Is this flexgate or could be something board related?

FlexGate is mostly noticeable when you are tilting the lid at different angles as the frayed ends of the thin foil traces make and break contact. At some point the break gets to a point the ends no longer are touching so the display stays off. The backlight is setup in three strings of LED's so what most people see is when one or two strings turn off and the remaining strings give an eerie Stage-light foot light effect.
If this is not what you encountered you are not seeing FlexGate but a deeper issue within your systems logic board backlight power circuit.
