Display saturation and brightness and flickering on MBP 2017 13"

The display on my MacBook Pro 13” which I use as my back-up suddenly stopped looking okay one day. First I noticed a difference in the saturation and brightness (it became more saturated and darker) and then eventually it got worse and started flickering and some lines were visible. It would then suddenly go back to normal, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for a few hours but eventually would revert to the issue.

To my knowledge, the MacBook hasn’t been dropped etc. So really not sure what is causing this. I took it in to the apple store and all they are telling me is that the whole display needs replaced, not giving a reason why this is happening. The notes they gave were very vague.

Has anyone had a similar issue or can shed more light on why this might be happening??

They are hiding the fact the display failed because of poor design!

Basically, the T-CON board has failed due to heat! Sadly, you’ll need to get a new display assembly.

Make sure you get a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro so you can ramp up (Turbo) the fan when you are pushing your system hard.

Also make sure you don’t block the vents and clean the dust buildup yearly.

Thanks for your reply @danj ! I had my suspicions after reading quite a few threads with problems for the 2017 MBPs.

I'm a pro photographer and use lightroom and photoshop which I know can make it pretty hot! This is my backup though to my iMac so still hasn't seen a lot of use even though it's about 3 and a half years old.

Really sad and annoyed this has happened. I think I should be covered under Scottish consumer law (valid for 5 years after the date of delivery) but it's on me to prove they sold me a prodcut that wasn't fit for purpose...

@danj Just to clarify. This issue isn't replicated when the MBP is plugged into an external display. Everything is all okay when working using an external display. Could it still be the T-CON?

Also, other people with this issue only seem to have horizontal lines at the top and/or bottom of the screen. Not the whole host of other issues I have with saturation and brightness.

@Lauren P - The T-CON board drives the internal display only! You were thinking GPU if both external display also failed,

I've seen a fair amount of these now so I'm very sure.
