Black Screen (bricked) after Big Sur update : also common for iMac?

Hi, I saw an add for a mid 2014 21,5” imac that was bricked after an attempt to update to Big Sur.

Mine is a Late 2015 and it has only one LED on the motherboard (power ok) and also does nothing. Can this also be the Big Sur faulty update situation ? I got mine second hand, don’t know the history.

I guess it needs a new logic board. Or should I try to change the processor first as it would have the 2nd LED lit if it would be a GPU problem. Thank you for your reply.

Update (02/05/2021)

Just realized the CPU is soldered to the board.

While Apple did have an issue with some MacBook Pro’s with the upgrade failing. I have not heard of any issues with the iMac’s MacBook Bricked By Big Sur? Here’s How To Fix It. The issue is with the I/O board in these systems.

So… I would visit an Apple Store to see what they say with both systems in hand. They should be able to address the issue if it was a Big Sure defect.

Hi Dan, thank you for the input. Was a long shot this would be the Big Sur issue on my model. Is it an option to carry in only the motherboard? I’ve never had the need to go to one of those stores (buy everything used, fix myself with help of this site). Or would they need the imac assembled ? Apparently a Late 2015 logic board is hard to find used, and very expensive (over 500 euro) new.

@hallervis - Nope! You'll need to bring in the whole system in

Be happy you only have a 21.5" system, I had at one point needed to carry in a good dozen of 2011 27" systems as they had GPU failures all within the first year and some needed a second visit soon after ;-{

We where pushing the systems too hard at the time and we got a bunch of 2013 Mac Pro's to replace the 27" systems (big difference in performance).
