HNB Services, the thermistor protects the compressor from overheating. If the compressor is running hot/pulling too many amps, the thermistor will open, stopping the voltage to the compressor, thus turning off the compressor. Once it cools down it will allow voltage to the compressor again.

Several things can cause the thermistor to open. The condenser fan might not be running. It should be running when the compressor is running. If the compressor is on but the condenser fan isn’t, check to see if something is in the blade keeping it from turning. Make sure the fan is getting proper voltage.

If the condenser coils are dirty this will restrict air flow needed to cool the compressor. The coils should be cleaned at least once a year. If the unit has ran hot for awhile, this could cause the copper lines to break down and cause a restriction or even a refrigerant leak. A certified refrigeration technician would have to be called to do those repairs. Due to the EPA guildlubes, only a certified tech can enter the sealed system.
