iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 Dual Hard drive Confusion

So I am beginning the process of upgrading my 2007 24” 2.8 GHz iMac. I have decided to throw in a 4GB stick (replacing a 2GB stick) to get to a total of 6GB ram. As well as swap out the 500 GB WD Velociraptor HD (that I put in a few years ago on my previous upgrade) with a new crucial 1TB ssd (same one recommended on the crucial site for this iMac) . I decided against going to the 3 GB processor as it would be a minimal change. I also am going to stick with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. The Geforce card is nothing but trouble from the research I did. So that’s the plan. I figure as long as I am in there I may as well clean up and replace the thermal paste for the Processor and GPU with some fresh Arctic silver.

I did run into a bit of contradicting info that brings me to the question(s) I have. I came across “Installing iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211 Dual Hard Drive” I’m now thinking that I’ll put the SSD where the optical drive was, install the OS on the SSD and leave the existing 500GB drive where it is, use it to restore my new OS and then use it for whatever. Awesome right? Not to be.

At this point I was building my shopping cart in amazon adding all the brackets and such that I would need. This is where I started to get confused. There is a link in the Dual HD tutorial for the “12.7 mm PATA Optical Bay SATA Hard Drive Enclosure” on amazon. When I tried to follow the link, it goes to a optical drive adapter for a dell and Lenovo laptop. I figured it was just a bad link so I began to search for the “Optical Bay SATA Hard Drive Enclosure” for my 2007 iMac. All I could find were ones for 2009 iMacs.

That is when I began to try and find out if the optical drive on the 2007 iMac is the same as the 2009 iMac? So I began to ask that question here. That is when I came across a reply to the Dual HD guide.

“These iMacs use ATA DVD drives. Using the SATA drive enclosure linked above is guaranteed to fail. :-(“

Sure enough, looking into my system info confirmed that the optical drive is on the ATA bus, and therefore there is no SATA connection where the optical drive is which also means no second hard drive (at least a SATA one). So it’s back to the original single SSD swap out plan.

I would suggest that the guide “Installing iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211 Dual Hard Drive” needs to be re-titled, to prevent confusion.

BTW

Here are the items I am using for my upgrade:
