Crackling sound from speakers with in tact membrane

A few months ago, my left speaker started crackling. I changed the sound balance settings to the right, and it was all good. But, a few weeks later, my right speaker also started crackling! The sound is all fine when I use a headset.

I removed the speakers to check for damage, but the membranes looks in tact. I’ve tried most other software fixes I found online, but can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong. I updated it to the latest software, and that didn’t help either.

It's not clear did you try a new speaker? If not I would give that a try.

@danj Thanks, Dan. I was thinking about getting new speakers, but thought I'd take a look to see if there was any obvious damage. I'm worried now that replacing them might not work since they look perfectly fine, but I guess that's the only option left.

The speaker uses a coil which wraps around a tube around a magnet or steel core. The gap between the tube and the core is very narrow gap sometimes grit finds its way into the gap which will effect the speaker.

The other possibility is on the logic board where a noise suppression capacitor has failed.

Let's hope it's the cheaper option here.

Thanks for the reply Dan. I bit the bullet and replaced the speakers and it’s working thankfully. Its strange how both failed but for now they seem to be working well.
