Deck is raised,despite handle down

My CubCadet LTX1040 is having some issues. After replacing the belt earlier today I rode my mower for a few hours when the blades stopped turning. Upon turning it off,I noticed that the deck was raised two inches while the blades were still lowered and refused to turn. The handle you lower and raise the deck made no difference when adjusting it.What could I have done to cause this?
