Black screen. Possible backlight issue?

Hi everyone,

I have an issue with my MacBook Pro 15” 2017 model.

I was using it in the evening Wednesday and it was working fine, I closed the lid and yesterday morning I went to open it and the screen was black. I realised that actually it was on and working, and as I’ve read, I could shine a light on the screen and just about make out what was on it. I could also connect it to my tv and mirror the screen which came up on the tv fine.

After calling apple and searching forums, I have reset the SMC, reset PRAM and nothing has changed.

I’m so upset and can’t understand why this has happened, but apple have suggested that I send it to them and it will probably cost around £650 to fix. (I cannot afford this)

Please could someone give me advice on what I can check/do to fix this and enlighten me to why this may have happened? I am very careful with it, I haven’t knocked it, there’s been no water near it etc.. It seems ever so random.

I should mention that I bought the laptop secondhand earlier this year. T. Previous seller had it services 19th January at Covent Garden apple store where he originally bought it. The service as far as I know included a new logic board and top case with battery.

Thank you for your help.

Kind regards,

Tim

You should get a copy of the paperwork as you might be able to convince Apple this should be covered under the repair warranty.

But you have two things against you Apple Stores are closed (which would be best to visit in person) Vs a faceless person over the phone thats not going to bend. And the amount of time is outside of the repair services warranty.

Sadly, I think your backlight logic on the logic board has failed. The other possibility is the FlexGate issue but your symptoms here don’t lineup with it. FlexGate involves the ribbon cable that goes between the T-CON board to the display assembly which the backlight power is sent. One would encounter a stage light effect

Block Image

Which is where every first and/or second backlight LED has lost its power and then the third set finally looses its power so you have no image at all. You would have noticed it! Here it was and then wasn’t! Thats a very different issue.

Sadly, I have no magic here, I think you’ll need to get your system serviced which will cost you. You maybe able to limp-by if you have an external monitor which you can use in the meantime, clearly that doesn’t make is very portable.
