Often I would have to keep pressing the start button because the system would shut down during startup.
Eventually it would start, but now it’s dead. I’ve replaced the battery and the MagSafe charger indicates Green

OK now that we’ve narrowed down your system.
Your issue is a bad C7771 capacitor which Louis goes over here in this video: What causes no power most 2008-2009 17" Unibody Macbook Pros & how to fix it
This is a tricky soldering job! I would find someone with the proper skills and tools to properly diagnose it and if bad replace it.

Can you tell us which model is yours:
A1151 & A1212 both of which have the ATI (AMD) Radeon GPU.
Or, do you have
A1229 & 1261 which have the NVIDIA GeForce GPU?

Which EMC is yours?
2272 or 2329 which have the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT and GeForce 9400M dedicated GPU's
Or
2352 or 2564 which have the AMD Radeon HD 6770M dedicated GPU
Apple also produced a few 2352 with the NVIDIA GeForce 330M GT as well.
