Are the internal speakers actually really bad in this computer?

I bought a used 24 inch late 2006 iMac off ebay with the intent of turning it into an external monitor for my macbook pro by buying an LVDS controller board and then splicing the speakers so that they can be reused as well and I havent done any of this yet because as soon as the computer arrived, I noticed when playing music the speakers sounded really bad, they sounded distorted with no bass and a little crackly. I dont know if the speakers from this old iMac were actually that bad or are they blown or damaged or something? My 20 inch 2008 iMac ive had for 10 years sounds 100% better when i play music off of it as well even though its smaller and only 2 years newer
