How to replace both SSD blade and HD of Fusion drive with 1 SSD drive

I want to replace both the SSD blade and the HD with a single SSD drive in a late 2012 iMac 27”. Do I need to first split up the Fusion Drive or can I simply remove both SSD blade and HD and replace the HD with the SSD drive following the respective instructions? I do have a time machine backup.

Reason: the SSD blade reports an error and I always wanted to upgrade the HD anyway.

To do it properly you need to break the fusion drive set before altering the drives.

The systems firmware settings need to be cleared.

Thanks @danj , I successfully went through the whole ordeal. One complication I ran into was to create a recovery partition on the replacement SSD. SuperDuper - which I had used for cloning the original fusion drive onto the replacement SSD - doesn't create a recovery partition. Luckily, I found a way to add one after I had replaced the fusion drive: https://github.com/rtrouton/create_macos...

@renaldow - We haven't used cloning software in years! I think the last time I used it was with OS-X Tiger.

As you have discovered cloning won't create the recovery partition. In addition cloning software often caries over lots of stale data and can also bring over corruptions as it does not check the integrity of the data block by block.

Today its just best to install a fresh copy of the OS on a virgin drive and then use Migration Assistant to move your apps and data over.

Thanks @danj ! I'll do that for the Catalina install on this machine. Yesterday, I simply wanted to find the fastest way possible to replace my wife's fusion drive, which showed signs of impending failure...
