Home button is erratic

A friend bought a used iPhone 8 plus. The screen had a line running down it and the home button was “sticking" and would click randomly.

While replacing the screen I noticed that the taptic engine was the wrong size. It turns out it was from an iPhone 8! I ordered a new one from AliExpress and installed it thinking that was causing the issues. Unfortunately it's still happening.

Currently, the home button will work fine (albeit not very responsive) right after powering on but after a while it will stop responding and will also randomly activate with nothing touching it.

Touch ID doesn't work - I get the warning when turning it on. I have the feeling that it is an original from another phone - possibly even an iPhone 8 instead of an 8 plus.

Any insight into my paranoia?

This could be a screen issue as the HB flex runs through the screen assembly. If the screen has a line through it, it may be damaged and causing Home button issues. The iPhone 7/8 series have a very inconvenient bend on the Home Button flex. It’s really easy to tear the flex, either near the logic board connector or at the 90 degree bend before it sneaks underneath the LCD heat shield. You have to be careful when you lift the screen off the first time but also anytime the flexes are connected and you have the device open.

The other area that is easily damaged is the connector on the Home Button itself and the opposite connector on the short flex that runs underneath the heat shield.

The long and short of it is that there are multiple failure points. You will need to carefully inspect the Home Button and flex to see if there is any damage. Magnification here will help.  Look for tears to the flex or any physical signs of damage. You should also check the connector to insure none of the pins are damage or that there isn’t any debris.

I've since replaced the screen and it's still happening which makes me think it's the home button itself. I'm going to install a third party home button and enable the assistive touch floating button.

I think he bought a lemon do intimately I'm just trying to make the best of it for him.

I'll inspect the home button closer up later. Thanks for the input!!
