Car not moving in reverse?

I was in a parking lot and stopped to use the ATM. I return to my car, and put it in reverse. It moved all of about half a foot and stopped moving. I put it into first gear and it moved forward just fine. I had someone else try to back it up so I could see what was happening. When the gas was hit, the back would lift as if the parking brake was up (it wasn't) and the wheels did not move. I had enough room to get out of the parking lot going forward, and drove home. I had no problem going forward, but nothing moving backward. What is the issue?
