MacBook Pro A1706 question

Question is a friend gave me his macbook pro A1706 laptop. He slept on it by acident and broke his screen. Now to me i really dont think the screen behind the glass is broke. I do know the glass is broken unless its an all in one lcd screen. On this site they do sell macbook pro screens but can i just buy a glass bezel instead or do i have to buy the whole entire lcd screen and if so which one would i get. I know they cost alot but i just wanted to ask.

Despite what it looks like there’s no glass covering screen, it’s just an about 1mm thick sandwich that makes the retina screen and when it breaks it’s so hard to replace it that only a few very skillful specialized labs are able to reuse the aluminium lid for refurbishing. You’ll have to replace the lid, I know it’s painfully expensive but there are no other options.

@itechbrendan Good to hear you've been in luck with the replacement! Don't forget to hit the answer accepted button if it was helpful in getting you to the solution, it may serve for future reference to other users too.

@arbaman - Yes, the cover glass is sorta independent to the LCD screen but its very difficult to take off here's a a good view: MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown. Step 6 is where people mess up as the display ribbon cables are very exposed and often damaged in the process. Even I don't go this deep as its not worth the risk. And getting the cover glass is not easy as its not an Apple spare.

If you seen my question i already fixed it and it was easy to repair i bought a screen and the glass peace and it wasnt that hard to remove at all. I was easy on the heat gun and heat playe but other then that very easy and fast as well only took me 15 minutes from taking it apart and putting on the new screen. Thanks very much for all of your input and like wise keep up the good work as well

@itechbrendan Sorry Brendan but you're making me a bit confused, retina screens surely have a superficial glass layer as @danj says, but the full sandwich including glass comes at 1.1mm thickness, it may be removed with great patience but afterwards you throw everything away. I've never seen or heard of anybody replacing the glass nor I've ever seen the glass for sale anywhere. Cheapest lcd panel on earth for a A1706 is priced well above 250$ in China, transport, customs and duties excluded..I don't find that cheap. The A1502 for some reason is even more expensive.

Am I right thinking there's a mistake in the model selection ? It sounds to me much more likely you've got an A1278 there ;)

Buying a used machine with bad logic board to swap the screen could be a solution if you can find one at a good price. Good luck :-)

I've been looking for one a couple of months ago, but in the whole world all I managed to find was working Macs with broken screens..no surprise when you look at the 900$ price tag.
