Can you give us a bit of history here ... did you have a liquid spill at some point or sit your system down on a wet surface? Did you bang or drop your system? The more details the better.

I had the same experience when I spilled liquid on my laptop.

I've been thinking a little more about your question and have come to the conclusion that it may be that your MacBook does not support this font. The second option may be that the source of the font is questionable and because of this, there is a problem with the font. This should not happen with a font from a normal site/source. I would advise you to download the font from another site, you can from this one https://upfonts.com/chiller-salt-life-fo..., and see if this problem occurs again. I usually download fonts here and have never had any problems with their display.

You have one or more bad fonts installed and/or you have a font cache corruption issue. The latter is more likely. Download and run FontNuke; it’s the fastest way to clear out your font cache.

@secondlife - I doubt thats going to fix this.

It's possible to the OS is corrupted so the OS needs to be re-installed or the drive is failing. Probability tells me more like a messed up keyboard.

@danj — The issue that @dennislumahan describes is EXACTLY the sort of thing that happens when a font cache goes bad. I'm not saying that it CAN'T be any of the things you've mentioned, but STARTING OFF with a reinstallation of the OS or replacement of the hard drive or keyboard over what appears to be, by every indication, little more than a corrupt cache file is like firing a tactical ICBM to a loose finishing nail.
