Why does my camera keeps switching between modes/settings on its own

My Nikon P530 keeps switching between modes when turned on. From auto to night back to auto to moon. It will cycle around in the modes, occasionally staying in the one I placed it on, usually auto, long enough for me to get a photo. It mostly does this in the beginning of turning it on, and if I wait it settles down. but then I need to leave it on to avoid going through the process again. And it will still randomly switch around regardless of if I leave it on, just not as much as right after turning it on. Any way I can fix this?

Hi Kati,

What mode is the top mode dial set to? Does it still happen if you set it to something else, such as "Aperature" [A], or Manual [M]?

I haven't noticed it happening in those modes, but I rarely, if ever, use them. Mostly just in auto mode, scene mode, landscape or night landscape.

I ask this mainly because I'm wondering if the dial has gotten loose or has bad contacts, or if it's a camera software issue.

Googling around, it looks like this is a common problem amongst the Coolpix. Someone suggested trying to take the battery out for a few minutes, to reset the camera back to factory defaults. Others suggest rotating the dial back and forth completely a few times.

oh thank you, I will try those ideas!

My Nikon coolpix P610 does this for instance if I have it on Aperture priority it will randomly dial then go back to Aperture but it says it’s in auto mode it does this on other modes. It will randomly dial through all modes.

I found this on a repair site and want to know if this is possibly the problem.

Electronic Processing Unit Failure.

All cameras, which are controlled via microchip, have what is called an EPU (electronic processing unit). This is basically a power supply housed on the main circuit board of both digital and film cameras. When this fails, the camera may fail to power on entirely, change modes for no reason, fail to perform without a given reason, and work inconsistently if at all. Swift battery drain can also be caused by EPU malfunction.

I’ve experienced that it can be caused by the electrical contacts on the bayonet and lense combination.

  • Remove the Camera Body From the Lense.
  • Inspect and wipe clean both the electrical connectors on the body and the lense.

* Try reproducing the same problems with another lense.

That would definitely make sense, except this camera does not have interchangeable lenses.
