Black Screen White Dots -> Working Sound

My friend recently gave me his refurbished Xbox 360. We tested it out to see what was wrong with it and here is what we found:

  • No RRODs
  • Sound works
  • Turning it on displays a black screen with white dots running across diagonally.

I googled around and this appears to be (correct me if I am wrong) a GPU problem leading up to the dreaded RROD.

I plan to take apart the Xbox and deal with the problem. I've received recommendation to do many things and I wanted to consult iFixit before I purchase anything.

Do I need to resolder the GPU connectors? Buy a new heatsink? Reapply thermal paste? Clean the fans?

Help would be greatly appreciated!

I do plan to reflow the motherboard and then using the RROD Fix Kit to ensure it will work- but before I do that I want to be familiarized with the nature of the "black screen white dot" problem. That way I can prepare beforehand and maybe even purchase a new GPU.

It's definently a problem with the GPU. It will probably need to be reflowed, and have the x-clamps replaced with screws. Buying a new GPU chip is not ever necessicary unless there is physical damage to it. If it is a 1st generation "Xenon" console (Manufactured 2005-2006, and with no HDMI port) then you should look into buying a 2nd generation GPU heatsink. (These have a heatpipe, and will keep the GPU cooler) and I always recommend replacing the thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5.

Thanks for your reply! So basically I'll purchase the RROD kit, take it apart and follow the reflow / RROD guides.

I believe its a 1st-gen so after this is done I will use Xbox 360 Xenon GPU Heat Sink in place of the original GPU heatsink?

Yep that's a 2nd generation heatsink. It should keep your GPU nice and cool. One little bit of advice though: It's very important to install the RROD repair kit (The screws fot the heatsinks) correctly, the first time you do it. It's very important to install the screws moderatly and evenly tight. If you reflow it while applying uneven pressure to the GPU, you will do more harm than good.

Thanks so much- I will follow your advice when I get started on it!
