iPhone 3GS

Revamped version of the iPhone 3G with faster processing speeds. Repair of this device is similar to the 3G, and requires simple screwdrivers and prying tools. Model A1303 / 8, 16 or 32 GB capacity / black or white plastic back.

3GS Volume and Power button Rattles

Hi All,

New to the site, but used it for a recent Iphone 3GS back cover replacement & home button fix.

I have because of the above had the phone totally disassembled and when putting it back together, the power button is sunken, the volume buttons rattle and the mute button feels different (not quite sitting correctly).

Is there something I'm missing? I was extremely careful during reassmble and have made sure all screws are in the right place (I think!).

Any advice would be great.

New replacement iPhone 3g/gs cases have variances that cause difficulty fitting basically every part from the bezel, buttons and even the SIM tray correctly. OEM does not mean it was made by the same Factories that Apple sources its Parts from. Unless you used a Real Original iPhone Case for replacement consider yourself lucky if everything works.

What would be your advice? Scrap the one I have purchased and buy a genuine?

if the power button doesn't fit in the case opening properly you could try filing it a little with fine sand paper, the ring does sit toward the bottom and sits on a small ledge in the rear case. don't over tighten the screws or you may not have any play in the button.as for the headphone jack.. take a look at the under side- it has a "tab"? (for want of a better word) that makes it sit flat. you need to slide the jack first then place into opening. the volume control is a PITA..fiddly as anything! it may be that the holes in your back case aren't deep enough or you haven't tightened the screws? trial and error..sorry.

The volume and mute buttons are associated with the headphone jack assembly - check that you have re installed this part correctly. The power button has a metal "loop" on the back - make sure you have rotated it the correct way prior to installing - specifically the note in step 18

Do you know which way the "loop" should sit on the power button? I've tried up and down, and down seemed the only way (down being towards the bottom of the housing) it would fit correctly.

Also, I've checked countless videos and walkthroughs on disassembly but can't find really detailed images of the headphone jack positioning. I was very careful to check how it was installed befpre removing it but experienced advice would be awesome.

From the power button guide linked above - The lock button is attached to a metal handle. It can rotate 180º in one side and 135º in the other. When putting it back remember to rotate 180º so that the metal handle faces down (towards the back panel).
