Where can I find my hard drive?

Hi, I am trying to replace my hard drive because it has so little space, but I can’t find it, is there a way to replace it, or is it soldered onto the motherboard already?

Your machine has a Embedded Multimedia Card or eMMC. It is integrated into the logic board and is not upgradable

The storage on your device is an embedded Multi-Media Controller meaning that it is soldered to the motherboard.

These things ARE upgradable!

There is a tiny unused M.2 SSD connector inside!

Take all the screws out and then begin separating along the tiny seam between the two hinges (I found this to be the easiest place to start).

There are two different storage M.2 types that can fit into these Lenovo computers due to the socket they chose to install.  Unfortunately these computers will only work with one of the types.

They put in a socket that CAN TAKE an X4 (4 lane) NVMe M.2 SSD, but this computer will NOT work with one!

Instead you need to buy an M.2 SATA X2 (two lane) SSD.  You can spot the difference by looking at the number of key notches (B+M) in the card edge connector of the SSD.  You need one with TWO notches, not just one (M-only), even though an NVMe X4 SSD (that only has the one notch) can fit in the socket.

Oops, might have been mistaken here: I have an N22, which is different inside than an N23. That said there still might be a connector for this, just in a more hidden place so it might be worth taking a look.

Your don't mistaken here: your answer, James, also applies to the Lenovo N23. There is also an unused M.2 SSD connector there inside near the small battery which you can't miss. You are also correct: An X4 NVMe M.2 SSD actually does not work in this Notebook.

I think you are right James because I have an N23 that has a 128 GB SSD inside. I actually want to downgrade it to a smaller size. My question is whether you have to remove the whole motherboard to get to it. Im also reading that it should have an upgradable RAM slot but I cant get a solid answer.

@ubecon can you please give a full guide on where I will find the unused M.2 connector?
