Want to replace battery myself , is apple still bricking phones?

I live 2 hours away from

an apple store and can’t burn my day going to them. Are there any reports of apple still bricking phones through updates ?

I read reports that replacing the battery will also cause Touch ID to stop working , is this still the case ?

No, and I've never heard of that being a thing. It's replacing the home button that would cause Touch ID to stop working.
