MacBook Pro 15 Unibody Mid 2012 Freezes on boot

My MacBook Pro Mid 2012 15inch Unibody is getting stuck on boot up. The bar makes it about half way and sits there. The motherboard is 820-3330. I have changed the HDD out with a known working one to no avail. The machine will not boot off of a USB HDD. The machine will boot the Apple Hardware Test from a USB but will not find an issue.

You have a classic case of worn HD SATA cable!

You’ll need to get a new cable MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable and you want to follow this IFIXIT guide MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive/IR Sensor Cable Replacement. You also want to apply a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over. In addition you don’t want to over fold the cable! You want smooth arcs not sharp bends. The thin foil wires are fragile! Which you don’t want to damage.

I would recommend you reformat the drive (after backing it up) to make sure any errors are cleaned up.

This did not work. The issue is that the computer is refusing to boot from both the HDD and USB. I can't boot from a USB as it will freeze in the middle of the boot screen.

To be clear you are using the on-board diagnostics using the D key when booting the system (no need for the USB drive). If thats the case then your dedicated GPU has failed.

If on the other hand you are booting up under the USB diagnostics tool (Apple Diagnostics) then you don't have the correct OS on your USB drive for your system and/or you have a hardware lock enabled.

I have the Apple Hardware Test on a USB. The machine keeps giving me Error DEC400 when I try the "D" Key.

DEC400 is a diagnostics app failure as its overlays are missing for your system.

You'll need to re-install the diagnostics onto your boot drive (USB). Follow this guide GitHub - Apple Hardware Test.

The fact you do get a display image in the attempt of testing is telling me you are either not running the correct OS for your system or your dedicated GPU has failed. You can also prove this by just starting up your system under Target Disk Mode holding the T key. You don't need any OS or working drive! You should see a FireWire & Thunderbolt Icon on your display if you do you are running under the Intel intergraded graphics engine (just like diagnostics) If you have a second system you should be able to connect your two systems together and run Disk Utility to test your target systems drive.
