Replacing both Ram chips at once?

I have a iMac 24 EMC 2134 with 1 Gig total in two slots. I am replacing them with a 1 Gig and a 2 Gig (3 Gig max for my Mac) in each of the slots. I read somewhere that I need to replace only one chip at a time but I haven't seen any more info on that. So my question is can I simply swap out the two old ones with new ones at the same time?
