How large an HDD can I install?

I need to replace the HDD in a friend's iMac and need to know how large a drive it will take. It's an intel Core 2 duo 1.83 and the current hdd is a 7200 160 GB unit. The repair place she took it to said she can only add a 250GB unit and wants several $100 to do so. Can a larger (more easily found!)drive fit w/ out special formatting?

Also, can I format the drive w/ Leopard from my MacBook core 2 beforehand to save time before bringing the drive to her for install? Otherwise, approx how long will cloning the drive take assuming it's pretty full? We're pressed for time since one of the two of us has to be at our mutual place of work at all times during business hours.

Thanks Mucho!

There's no limit on the hard drive size on this machine. Do not go back to the person that told you this, either they don't know what they're talking about or they have a 250 GB drive they're trying to move. This machine uses a standard 3" drive SATA drive. Drop a 2 TB drive in it if you want, I got one at Best Buy yesterday that would work just fine for $99.99. I currently have three of this type of machine. You can also upgrade the processor on it (I've done it). If vertical lines ever appear on the screen come back as there is a free fix on it from Apple.

Muchas Gracias Mayer.

Any particular danger points to worry about during the procedure? It's not my rig, after all...

Removing the frame can be tricky. The guide uses a card to release the upper hooks from the back, I have not done well doing this. I pull the bottom of the frame out first and then use the card from the front to release it. There are four screws that hold the LCD in place. They are deep. Removing these screws and particularly putting them back in is best done with a heavily magnetized torx driver.

Thanks again. I'll stop by Radioshack and see if they have a torx kit since my driver has short bits.
