Why is my screen doing this? What part failed?
it’s starts and just does this. There is no actual damage to the laptop. What has gone wrong?

Sorry guy ;-{ You’ll need a new display assembly. If you look carefully you can see the damage
This is an edge compression break. Basically, something banged into the edge of the display fracturing the LCD base which is more brittle than the cover glass.
If you have AppleCare+ you do get a discount on the repair. If you don’t have the extended warranty it will set you back around $700 USD - Ouch!
