Service Battery on MacBook Pro with Low Cycle Count

Hi! I’ve got a “Service Battery” warning on my laptop a couple of week ago. The warning disappeared after I did a SMC reset, but it’s back again this morning. This all started happening right after I upgraded from High Sierra to Mojave (mentioning just in case that’s not a coincidence).

I’ve attached my Coconut Battery results. Is there anything I can do or does this battery really need to be serviced?

Thank you for your help!

UPDATE 11/15/2018 For anyone else who has this problem: My battery was eligible for replacement under the “13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) Battery Replacement Program.” “Apple has determined that, in a limited number of 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) units, a component may fail causing the built-in battery to expand. This is not a safety issue and Apple will replace eligible batteries, free of charge. Affected units were manufactured between October 2016 and October 2017 and eligibility is determined by the product serial number.” You can check your serial number here: https://www.apple.com/support/13inch-mac...

I’m in the same boat! I own a late 2016 MacBook Pro 13’’ without Touchbar. I’ve noticed that my battery capacity had dropped to around 80% quite fast (around spring 2018, I’d say). However, at only 193 cycles my capacity is now down to around 65-70%. This is unacceptable! I’m not sure if it’s connected to the upgrade to Mojave though.

I tried recalibrating the battery by completely discharging and charging it to 100%.. twice. I also reset the SMC. Nothing helped.

I still have Apple Care coverage until November 2019, so I guess I’ll be waiting until then. But overall it’s really disappointing by Apple.

Raffael, I chatted with Apple and my battery was eligible for replacement under the “13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) Battery Replacement Program.” “Apple has determined that, in a limited number of 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) units, a component may fail causing the built-in battery to expand. I hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. I'm aware of this replacement program and as I said, I could replace the battery until next year anyways, because of the AppleCare program.

Do you know if the rapidly decreasing battery capacity is in any way connected to the expanding battery issue? I'm just worried that the replacement battery will lose its capacity with the same speed... My wife's MacBook early 2015 has around 500 charge cycles and the capacity is still around 85%.

The reason why I buy MacBooks is because they last for a long time. If the battery is unacceptable after two years, I might as well buy another laptop next time around.

Bad luck for my MacBook 2017 with touch bar! After 116 cycles of my almost 3-yo MacBook Pro (4 Thunderbolt Ports) I've got a diagnosed battery fault (officially in Apple Service). What they've said? That I SHOULD'VE USED BATTERY MORE OFTEN... Complying with official Apple recommendations I've used it from time to time (once per 10 days), but it turned out to be not enough. Apple should definitely change their official recommendations regarding battery care, because right not I'm feeling completely misleaded by this company. Cost of replacement is $320 – BEWARE and USE YOUR BATTERY MORE OFTEN!

Hi

I am having a macbook pro mid 2018 with same problem. Battery is not charging. I have even replaced the battery and it is showing me also Cycle Count 0 .

The laptop was new but not used.

Apple is not replacing the battery for free. I have get information for the cost approx. 1000 US$ hence it is not under warranty.

It was also showing with the original battery with Cycle Count 1.

As said, it was still in a sailed box and I have opened it.

If macOS says “service battery” it truly means it’s time to replace your battery. coconutBattery shows that the battery life is poor too so it’s definitely time.
