Bad screen colors, some gray colors look green

English: Weeks ago, maybe a few more, my MacBook Pro began to display greenish colors instead of some colors of the grayscale.

This is not a permanent failure, but it depends on how much dark colors are on the screen. For example, if I am running an app that has a gray contour, if it is in a small window size, it looks good (real gray), but if I maximize it or turn it to fullscreen, the color changes to this kind of green.

I did the hardware test in internet recovery mode, but nothing appeared. Also when I entered the Apple Support web page in this same mode, there was this color failure on the top right corner of the top bar of the webpage (you can see in the video).

Here I have some pictures of examples when the failure appears:

I tried SMC and NVRAM reset.

Also, when I connect my system to an external screen, the external screen looks good and has no problem with its colors.

My systems details: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

  • Processor 2GHz
  • Memory 8GB

Your screen appears to have Moiré patterns. By chance do you have a screen protector on the display?

If not the cables between the LCD and the T-CON board may have an issue.

Can you tell us what preceded this. Do you find the angle of the screen alters things?

Update (10/23/2018)

Frankly, I would go an Apple Store to press for it to be fixed under a warranty exception !! Clearly this is a defect in the cable system between the display and the T-CON board which is held in the main body of the laptop. Here’s a breakdown of the connections:

The newer MacBook Pro systems are having issues in all of the 13” & 15” the 2016 & 2017 displays. The constant flexing causes failures in the new design!

The most common issues have been the stage light effect where the odd vs even backlight LED’s are not powered. The wink out effect which is when both sets of backlight LED’s loose power, or lastly the LCD signals from the T-CON board are messed up which is what is happening with you causing Moiré patterns & odd coloring when the display is tilted.

So far Apple has been fixing the systems which are still under warranty or people who have AppleCare+ coverage for free. Apple has been replacing the displays for some and others not, which are outside of the standard warranty window.

Frankly, Apple should post an extended warranty program for the displays like they did for the keyboard failures. This is even a clearer case of design failure than the keyboard issues!

So you’ll need to do a bit leaning on Apple to fix this. Be polite but firm! Visit the Store in morning on a Tuesday as thats the best time when the staff is not burnt out from the weekend and not so jaded for the day. You’ll likely need to press to speak to a higher level manager. So far from the reports listed here its about 75% getting it done under a warranty exception.

Even still I would let Apple fix your system as then you’ll have a record of the fix so when Apple finally gets an extended warranty program started you’ll be able to post for a rebate for your costs! Given the number of people effected we’ve seen here it should have been done months ago! I guess someone is going to need to start a class action lawsuit as well as visibility in the Apple media to get them to move!

Thanks for you answer @danj .

I don’t have a protector on the display.

I hope it is the connection so it would be easily repaired.

Thanks to your last question, I found that the angle of the screen affects the problem: when it is close to be closed, the effect totally disappears.

I don’t know how and when it started, but the only thing I know (or my hypothesis) is that this failure depends on how much dark color is on the screen. If I have a full black wallpaper, all windows look greenish.

By the way, can the cable between LCD and T-Con board be replaced alone without replacing the whole screen?

Sorry to say you'll need a new display assembly, Aprox. $700 US - Ouch!

Holy sh..

You are awesome Dan, thanks a lot!

I'll tell you how it goes.

I hope I can get the warranty exception, because we do not have official Apple Stores only authorized resellers with technical support. I think it would be a little be more difficult, wouldn't it ?

Pipehaase, How di you resolved it?. Is this a cable issue or LCD issue?
