Is there a generic P5 pentalobe or a special one for MacBook Pro

I need to fix my MacBook Pro 2015 lcd screen. The tutorial on this site lists 5 necessary tools. One of them is a “P5 Pentalobe screwdriver retina MacBook Pro and air”.

I see the following item advertised on iFixit:

“p5 pentalobe screwdriver retina MacBook Pro and air”

Then I also see the:

“Pro tech toolkit” which includes a P5 head.

Are these two screwdrivers the same size? I’d like to buy the “pro tech toolkit” because it appears to include everything I need.

Thank you, Ringo. It would be nice if iFixit would be clear on this. If you look at the MacBook Pro 2015 screen repair guide it lists 3 screwdrivers:

”T5 Torx Screwdriver,”

“T8 Torx Screwdriver,” and

“P5 Pentalobe Screwdriver MacBook Pro Retina and Air.”

Then when you visit the page where the screwdriver is sold it does the same thing.

Why not just list it as P5 Pentalobe? Or if this shape is particular to this model of MacBook, it would be nice if the Pro Tech Toolkit would list the bit the same way vs just listing it as “Pentalobe P5”

Sadly, Apple makes this hard, don’t blame IFIXIT!

So to be clear Torx is an industry standard fastener. Now Apple had to create there own fastener! Pentalobe While it looks like a Torx which has six lugs the Pentalobe has five lugs. Just looking at the side It’s hard to tell which is which.

The guides are correct and depending what you are working on you could need even other bits!

P5 Head is a Pentalobe 5 Screwdriver. It´s the same size.

The Pentalobe screws are what Apple came up with to try to prevent third party repairs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentalobe_...

P5 - References both the type (P) Pentalobe and the size of the bit (5)

With Torx follow the same marking method (T) for Torx an the size of the bit (5)

@mayer the Pentalobe bit would work on someone who doesn't have a toolkit, sadly.

The bit isn't common, so many screwdriver sets don't include it. It's usually only included with electronics repair driver kits.

@nick - All you end up doing is bugger up the fastener head as the bit is hardened steel. Likely to the point you can’t reuse it or it may not come out.

It’s best to use the correct driver (or bit).

They are not going to be in most toolkits as they didn't come out till 2009.
