What is the latest processor that I can install?

I have a HP pavilion dv7 1273cl. It comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo T6400. I am trying to find out, what is the latest or best processor that I can upgrade to? Thank you..

I purchased an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9100 2.26GHz Quad-Core

Is the same socket so, it could work...

da

Same socket yes, but it depends on the Bios of the board. Unfortunately they never added new CPUs in their change log, so not aware of some kind of CPU Supported List. The Core 2 Quad come with a FSB of 1066 MHz instead of 800 with the Core 2 Duo. Its a risk. Give it a try, I believe the new CPU shouldnt get damaged by this.

Ok, so I added the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9100 2.26GHz Quad-Core, and I am not sure if it was a defective processor, or it didn't recognize the Quad . Luckily for me I also purchased the Intel Core 2 Duo T9600, which worked. I would still like to see where I can max out with processors. I would like to try the Intel Core 2 Extreme X9100, and at the very least the Intel Core 2 Duo T9900. All of which are socket P processors. Trying to add a bit more power and speed to this laptop. I maxed out at 8MB or RAM, now I just need a processor with a bit of power, speed, and Virtualization. The T9600 is cool, but I would actually like to see and feel the difference. I wish there were an easier way of finding out, with out going through trial and error. Too many screws on this machine. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your responses.. @Robert the T9600 also has a FSB 1066MHz, the cores are what I think were the problem. I am not sure..

I called HP and asked them about upgrading the processor, Big no no! lol I was told that the processor for this specific laptop could not be upgraded. What a bunch of bologna....

Notes for anyone wanting to upgrade the CPU on any computer to help ensure compatibility:

  • The obvious, make sure your new CPU shares the same socket as the motherboard/old CPU
  • Ensure the new CPU has the same TECH as the motherboard/old CPU. Often, CPUs will use same socket, but use different TECH (65nm vs 45nm), TDP or Voltage. (Socket, Tech, TDP & Voltage should be matched between old/new CPU)
  • Update the Bios Settings of the motherboard for a higher chance of compatibility.

Ensuring these things will increase the chances that an upgrade to the CPU on ANY computer will work.

Example as reference for purpose of Original Post:

The Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 uses Socket P with x86 architecture.

On Paper it looks like you should be able to upgrade a T7250 to a T9900 since it is also Socket P, x86 architecture, 35TDP with Voltage falling in the same range. Although SOME motherboards may support both processors, the T7250 uses 65nm TECH and the T9900 uses 45nm… this means MOST motherboards will NOT support this upgrade despite the same socket.

I hope this helps someone!

Here is a couple lists of Intel Duo Core Processors. You can swap out any processor for another on ON THE SAME LIST. If you are trying to upgrade from a Merom series Core 2 duo to something from the Penryn series, the odds are it will not work (some motherboards/bios might support it but I doubt it).

Hi I also consider upgrading the CPU in an old hp pavillion dv7-1040, so much older than Kev Jenkins.

Currently it operates at 95% CPU use (intel core 2 duo p7350). I have checked the specifications and other cpu has similar voltage but higher TDP. Would that be a problem?
