What happened? Did you take your system apart to do something to it?

da

purchased iMac without display and without HDD Dan

The thing is those errors only appear on Apple's Service Diagnostic based on macOS - the on based on EFI - showed just missing LCD and HDD thermal sensors.

I've read someone had all 2012 lineup (MacBook Pro and Air and iMac) and ALL of them showed that error (in macOS diagnostic version) BUT that would be strange.

So no display or internal HDD.

This would make sense as both the display and the HD have thermal sensors SMC depends on. Without the proper input it would give errors. Not understanding why its telling you to check the CPU heat sink.

You’ll need to get a HD installed (with the OWC sensor) and connect the correct internal display before you can diagnose this further.

High Sierra is installed on Apple SSD - OWC sensor is very expensive - I was thinking about this:- Apple-iMac-27-A1419-2012-2015-LCD-Skin-T...

And could You please tell me Dan - if no LCD thermal sensor (because no LCD) iMac is throttling (slow)?

I am 100% my other iMac but 2011 did not throttle (slowdown) because no Apple HDD - it had just fans full on - but no throttling.

I just want to know if something more serious wrong (because throttling) with iMac or just it is slow because no LCD thermal sensor - I don't want to but new LCD for £500 just to realise iMac/motherboard is damaged

Thank You

OK I think you're telling me the system has an Apple blade SSD installed on the logic board. If thats the case don't need to worry about the HDD as the system has a jumper (if I remember correctly) across the sensor socket.

The sensor you've found plugs into the display to then be picked up by the displays data cable so it won't help you here ;-{

Your older iMac does things differently! The newer Intel chips go into throttle mode which is why you see the difference.

Well, I don't have a solution for you. Somehow you need a display to properly test the system. I would risk it! As you are getting an image using the external display that only leaves the display connector and the power connections (you may need new cables). I would do a good inspection comparing with the IFIXIT guide images.

If you don't see any damage go for it!

I had the same diagnostic error on an iMac (27-inch, Late 2013). After replacing the faulty LCD thermal sensor the error went away.
