How to initialize new hard drive in optical drive bay

Just replaced optical drive with new HDD. I want to initialize it but I want to keep the SSD that's in the main bay as my main drive. Do I restore everything to the HDD in the optical bay anyway? Isn't there some other way to initialize it without moving everything away from the SSD?
