White lines on screen after drop - not booting past apple logo

Hi.

I just bought a broken iPhone 6, its arriving soon and I'd like to know your thoughts as to what I should try first.

The guy who owned it said it has a broken LCD after it fell on the floor, it hit the left chassis as seen in the photo and the glass near the front camera is chipped. The LCD was then showing some white stripes, and he tried to update the iOS to "solve" the problem and now its on a reboot loop.

Supposedly, the update was successful but it fails to start for the first configuration. It was also supposed to be working fine before it was dropped.

He has replaced the battery but it is still stuck in a boot loop but he has not replaced the screen. The phone has not come in contact with water.

I also asked if he has tried using DFU mode and he said he hasn't tried.

Where do you think I should start?

It probably loosened some pins connecting the screen to motherboard. I wouldn't be surprised if the screen (and maybe motherboard too) wasn't damaged. I would recommend opening it up and checking it out. There are guides for this, or you can go to a pro.

@kaedki Can a loose screen connection stop an iPhone from booting after a restore?

Correct me if im wrong, but I understand that after a restore, an iPhone checks the status of all of its components on boot and that would prevent it from booting up, is this correct?

I want to do this myself, I bought it to repair it and learn something from it, then resell.

I agree with Edison about the motherboard issue. I have seen youtube videos of pros who fix board level issues on iPhones and they get phones that have chips on the boards damaged from simple drops. I would consult a board level repair pro.

@thinksmartpc Do you think refixing the screen connector as Edison said could fix it? Apart from that, I was considering replacing the screen.

Yes. I would open the phone, if you are comfortable doing so and inspect the lcd and digitizer connectors on the motherboard. There should be a grid of gold contacts. Any contact out of place or missing will be noticeable. I would still consult a board level repair pro, unless you are good at micro soldering.
