there are plenty of reasons for muffled sound in earbuds,
-be sure to clean them out of wax, as earbuds easily buildup earwax, which will muffle the sound.
-volume setting problems. the iphones have volume limiters in their accessability settings. verify they are not set low.
-They could be blown. The speakers in them could have issues, but this usually results in either no sound, or crackling. rarely quiet.
-damaged filter. A filter in the bud circuits could be blown, or chipped, causing an improper frequency to come through.
- Poor blutooth signal. the blutooth may not be as strong as it should be, causing volume issues.

Do the earbuds work properly with any other device? Have you tried them on a laptop or another phone? Have you tried other earbuds or speakers? This should tell you if it's the earbuds or your phone that are the problem.
