Mac mini (late 2014) SSD questions/issues.

Well, I've spent the last few hours trying to find a definitive answer to my question. I'm usually able to do this without posting, but the waters are muddy and there's a purchase involved so I'm going to be safe rather than sorry.

I've recently purchased a Mac Mini (late 2014). I purchased the middle tier option, it came with a 1TB HD (no fusion drive). I would very much like to upgrade the storage...

It sounds to me that my only real option is it remove the 1TB HD and replace that with a SSD of my choosing. It's either that or I need to find and purchase an apple compatible SSD and flex cable so I can install the blade style SSD that the mini would have come with, if I had picked the fusion drive option.

If I'm off base or there have been any updates on this issue please let me know!

Thanks very much!

Jordan

Jordan, You are correct with your understanding of your options.

Don't forget the differences in the I/O throughput between the different interfaces though! The HD SATA interface is SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) and the blade SSD interface is PCIe 2.0 x2 (4.0 Gb/s).

I have just ordered a new SSHD for my Macbook Pro Mid-2012 and recommend this retailer.

http://www.drivesolutions.com/cgi/shop/u...

They have a vast archive of parts compatible with your device. The best part is all their Drives have a 100% compatibility guarantee so you know it will fit. Just click on a drive of your choice and it will give you a list of compatible models.

I purchased the 2 TB SSHD for the price and performance.

I have not found any that specifically state they fit the Mac Minis.

I did however find Ifixit itself has some available.

This is not a full SSD but it sure beats the performance of a standard HDD.

By far the easiest upgrade is to swap out the current HD for a hybrid SSHD as @raydog4285 recommends, or, just jumping to a 2.5" SSD.

If you are looking for still more performance that what it offers your only other option is to get the custom blade SSD from either Transcend or look on Amazon/eBay for a real Apple SSD. Getting the mid-frame with the needed cable as it turns to is quite easy.
