What is causing my laptop to turn on but with a black screen?

So, a few days ago I got the 'Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete' message. For a couple of hours, it hadn't gone away from that message so someone decided to turn it off.

I believe this may have been a bad decision because now it will not turn on.

Here's what I've found so far:

1.The power button lights up.

2.The CD Drive spins discs

3.The fan turns on.

4. Screen is absolutely black like it's still off.

5. External monitor shows nothing.

6. The Hard drive seems to only spin half way and the head doesn't not move.

It's Toshiba Satellite C55D-B5310. I've been searching everywhere but if I missed an answer to this question I would appreciate it if someone could direct me to that.

I forced shutdown my C55D-B5310 during an update and got the black screen of death. This was my replacement motherboard for the exact same reason I had to replace it. Only the charger and battery indicator led light up for activity even though when I go inside the laptop it's spinning. Tried a different HDD, same results.

@kaznel start of with connecting an external monitor and see what it shows. If it does not show anything as well it is possible that you A.have a bad GPU (motherboard issue) or B. your computer cannot find an OS. Most likely you have a bad hard drive which prevents the computer from loading an OS. Try to see if you can access the BIOS.

Step 1: Shutdown your PC while pressing the Shift key to turn off your computer completely. Note: By default, Windows 10/8.1/8 only puts the computer into "Hibernation" not shut down your device completely.

Step 2: Now restart the computer by pressing the power button - IMMEDIATELY start tapping the F12 key on the keyboard until the "Boot Menu" screen appears.

Step 3: Using the arrow keys, select and press "Enter".

If you can access it, set your boot priority to USB or optical drive and use a bootable CD or USB drive to gain access. Let us know what you get.

I forgot to mention that part. Nothing comes up on the external monitor either. So that means a bad GPU?
