Power adapter is hot and led light is flicker a faint green

I have a MacBook Pro laptop model A1278. It was on and running perfectly when I noticed the battery was on red. I got the power cord and plugged it in. After 20 minutes without any warning it shut off. I've tried the key sequence and nothing. I did notice the led light on the power cord is flickering a very faint green. Anyone got knowledge of what's going on?

@seekatrw - Brad, Can you give us the exact model so we can guide you the rest of the way. If you can read the S/N on the bottom cover you can plug it into here: EveryMac - Lookup then past the URL here for us to see what you have. If you can read the S/N take a look though the systems to see if you can pick it out EveryMac - MacBook Pro's

have you replaced the charger recently, and where did you buy it from? also, what capacity is left in the battery currently when you press the battery indicator on the left of the mac?

I'd suggest looking into the charger as the cause of the fault, as it may not be a genuine apple one.

Its typical for dodgy replacement chargers to flicker and not function properly, they even pose fire risks, so keep an eye on it if you dont know it to be genuine apple.

I'd suspect, that if the battery was about to run out of charge, and the charger is faulty, the charger just wasn't able to charge the battery at all, so it just powered off.

If you have no LEDs on the left side of the machine (the battery indicator) and the LED is flickering, then look to test the mac with a different charger before assuming the worst.

I hope this helps.

@thebookyard Thanks for fixing your profile so we can contact you. I was looking over your site for possible goodies i might need. I noticed that you don't sell the tools needed to do Mac repairs. You might be able to work with the iFixit darling @kaykay to possible work a deal to be a distributor in the UK for iFixit tools.

Thanks @mayer, its appreciated. We do sell the specialty ifixit tools, such as the iMac display removal tool and wheels, service wedge and iOpener, but typically haven't sourced many tool kits, as our customer base is primarily built of trade customers who already have the tools of the trade. We sell some tools for completeness for our more general customer base, but in house we typically use Wera tools for their quality. We do have a trade account on the EU iFixit website, but if @kaykay wants to drop me a line with some details, i'd be happy to take a look, as it may be something that we can start selling.

Thanks again

also @mayer, if you are in need of anything from our site, drop us a line first and apply for a trade account so you can get discounted prices. Anyone in the repair business can apply for a trade account, not just larger distributors or large repair centres.

@thebookyard Thanks Jon, I'll do that. I appreciate it.

hey @thebookyard, it's great to have you in the community! I've passed your info along to @cvneutron. He will be able to help you out with the details. Cheers!

Here's a good Apple T/N on checking things out: Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters

As Jon stated there are a lot of counterfeit MagSafe chargers out there that unsuspecting people buy. Sadly they can kill your system! Here's a bit more on them: Counterfeit Macbook charger teardown: convincing outside but dangerous inside and here is the risk: Lacking safety features, cheap MacBook chargers create big sparks

Get a REAL Apple MagSafe unit directly from Apple to test your system. You may need to replace the systems MagSafe connector as well.
