PS2 Slim making a grinding noise

So my PS2 is making the exact same noise as in this video:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z2gR3gKFr...

and according to this video it's the Worm thing. Now I have not taken my PS2 apart to check that worm thing, but it is making the exact same noise and only does it when a disc is inserted just like in the video so I assume it's the exact same problem.

Do I have to buy the replacement part and have someone replace it for me? Does Sony still do repairs on PS2? Or is there a home fix I can do?

I just got Okami for ps2 so really eager to get my ps2 up and running again.

If you think you can do the repair yourself i would recommend you to do it. The reapair isnt that hard and shouldnt take that long and i also dont believe that sony does still do work on the Play Station 2's anymore

Having such problems with the PS2 Slim models is way less commplicated than with a FAT model. After working on a FAT PS2 TWICE, having the same issue with a laser without being able to fix it I switched to a Slim model instead and had way less problems.

But back to your problem: Since I can't watch the video as the link says the video was taken down, I'm assuming the grinding Sound happens either when your ps2 is "standing" (vertical) while being started (when the laser goes to it's starting/reading position) - which would mean you either need a new laser motor or the worm gear needs to be lubricated -

or, if its a "clicking" noise WHILE reading a disc it could mean that your laser is dying.

You still need to take your PS2 apart to fix either of these problems. But trust me it isn't that hard (even I could do it after watching a short youtube video)

+ you could test, if your date/time battery is dead (if you set the time on the ps2 and the glowing orbs on the menu don't fly around, your battery is dead)

If the laser moves up but it doesn’t spin while making a grinding noise it’s because the 2nd contact isn’t touching. https://youtu.be/7a2JV6q134k

Follow his instructions, worked for me.
