Old liquid damage - trackpad and keyboard not working properly

Hello,

I unfortunately spilled a liquid (beer), in my Macbook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2012 about a year ago. As I tried to start it, it would not at first - only occasionally.

And when I could get it to start, the fans would go crazy, and the keyboard did not work with all keys. And also, the trackpad acted weirdly (making the cursor jump around randomly and so).

Anyway I thought that it was just not to save. But now, it has been laying dry for a year, and I have just tried to start it again, and it actually seems to be working perfectly! Except for:

  • only some of the keys in one area of the keyboard does not work
  • the trackpad is a bit imprecise, and right clicks instead of clicking normally

I thought then, that I would try to take it apart, to inspect how visibly damaged it is.

And I have done that now (following a tutorial).

Here below is a dropbox link to some pictures i have taken, showing the amount of damage.

The is a bit of corrosion, from what I can tell. Mostly around some of the screw-holes in the logic-board. Except from that it all seems to be "pretty good". I have not removed the batteries to take a look at the touchpad, as I thought that I would ask for some advice in this forum before proceeding any further.

I am wondering if some one could perhaps please give me some advice on whether they think, that it would work perfectly again if I would replace the keyboard and the touchpad, and maybe tried to clean all of the parts in isopropyl alcohol? And in that case, perhaps give off some good guidance on or tips for how to proceed? Or if you think that it is unrepairable?

Best and kind regards,

Jonatan.

If you clean everything, give it a new keyboard and trackpad, it would probably be fine. Replace the battery if it got beer on it too.

Must have been light beer. New keyboard for sure, then see if your battery is swollen before replacing the trackpad.
