What should I do if the speaker makes a garbled noise instead of reading me the directions?

Your speaker is most likely damaged. You can replace it by removing the back of the GPS case, and then desoldering the two wires connecting it to the motherboard. The speaker has a small amount of adhesive keeping it in place, so be careful when pulling the speaker off.
