Jud, check to ensure the crank case is not overfilled with oil, carburetor float/ fuel shut off solenoid may have stuck allowing gas into engine overfilling engine oil, if this is the case fix carb. and change oil/drain thoroughly and fill using fresh proper grade oil, before starting again. There are a lot more reasons for engine to smoke this is one of the common ones along with blown head gasket.

See links below for other causes and fixes.

Any engine will burn oil if you have worn piston rings, as the oil will pass through the narrow gap between the piston and the cylinder wall and burn in ignition chamber. You can also burn oil from worn exhaust valve seats. And finally, if you're using too lightweight of an oil, the engine can burn it as well.

Jud, Most common reason for small engine to all of a sudden to start burning oil is an over filled crank case. Some times a faulty needle and seat or fuel shut off solenoid can stick open, allowing gas to flood into the crank case overfilling it, thinning oil and allowing it to burn very easily. For more trouble shooting and to learn possible reasons for small engine burning oil/smoking check the attached links, good info to be found there. Good luck.

A blown headgasket causes sudden oil consumption and power loss.

As mentioned an engine filling with fuel due to needle valve sticking is very common and it can really damage an engine fast too. Damage to rings ,rods, valves, heads/gaskets instantly. Creates excessive wear to cylinder/bearings etc as oil is too thin if ran long.

Lot of damage can occur by this and the main reason all small engine manuals state operator should check oil before each use.

Not only checking for low oil it's for too much oil in the crank case from this occurring at any given time.

Ethanol makes needle valves swell & stick in older engines.
