Splicing wires on head phone jack to mp3 to am/fm converter

Ok, so my mp3 to am/fm converter has a head phone jack, which the wires detached. I took a broken pair of head phones and cut the wire. There is extra wires that dont match. Im guessing I need a special head phone jack to wire it to my converter? The two brass colored, blue and red wires from the mp3 match the head phones except theres an extra green wire from the head phones..microphone?? Anyhow I attached the colored wires that can be paired with the extra green wire just tapped off, that didnt work. Any help or knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
