Flickering Screen on battery power

Hi everyone,

since i changed the keyboard on my asus zenbook i noticed a strange phenomena...when running on battery power the screen is flickering almost all the time. But this only happens when i am on battery power. The screen is also very dim.

When i use the ac everything works fine, i get full screen brightness and there is no more flickering at all.

I am running on windows 10, adaptive screen brightness turned of, as well as intel hd graphics battery safer mode...latest drivers installed.

I checked all the ribbon cables and connections, everything fine so far. It would be great if someone could help me out.

Cheers

Ben

Hi

If you can get into the BIOS setup of your machine, do you notice the same problem? If so, it might have something to do with the hardware. Otherwise it might be a driver issue of some sorts? Perhaps also try disconnecting the keyboard altogether. It is possible that the keyboard backlight is driven by the same power supply as the LCD backlight and a shorted keyboard backlight module is causing the ppowersupply to malfunction.

Hi Larry, thanks for your quick reply. I thought so and did a check with the bios running and i got the flickering as well. So it seems to be a hardware related issue. What i don't understand is why this is only happening on battery power and not with the ac plugged in...

Sorry about the late reply. I was meaning to get back on here!

There's a good chance that something is up with one of the voltage converters on the motherboard. The battery voltage and the adapter voltage are a bit different and when on the lower voltage, a weak converter might have trouble producing the high voltage needed to run the display.

if you're up for the task of attempting motherboard repair, perhaps you can find a schematic online and perhaps see how the power circuit is driven in the laptop.

Hi Larry, thanks a lot for your reply. I dont think i can handle a motherboard repair on this level, as i am no technician, just an experienced amateur. Do you think it will be expensive to get a pro to look after the problem?

Cheers

I have the exact same problem after I opened the laptop (Asus UX303LA) so I could tighten the hinges on the display. I have looked after a new motherboard and they varry between 300 and 450 Euros. A bit expensive in my oppinion. I have updated the BIOS and of course it didn't help. The problem is obviously on the hardware side. It's a pitty since the battery was lasting around 6 hours.
