swithc on the side is turned to what? did you try to play with that little switch?

Is your phone is stuck in silent mode? It's not clear from your question.

Thanks for your help I have found the problem.
In settings> sounds> Lock Sounds> was in the OFF position when it was changed back to the On position the silent mode was removed.
