SSD compatibility for future upgrade

There has been quite some talk about [URL|Apple's propriety SSDs on the last generation of MBPs ]and I have been trying to understand what specifically hinders anyone from doing so. Ref:Install bigger SSD possible with latest model?

From what I understand, the biggest jump from the MBP 2014 to MBP 2015 was that the SSDs now use 4 lanes, thus delivering approx twice the speed. So my question is, can you just plug any M-keyed M.2 form factor SSD using 3rd gen PCIe x4,

so for instance this particular model:

Sadly, no. The M.2 interface Samsung is using is not physically the same as Apples. In addition the M.2 interfaces between the dual lane and the newer quad lane are not upwardly compatible. So you won't get the quad lane benifit in a system which has only a dual lane interface.

Here is the needed SSD: MacBook Pro with Retina 13" & 15" Late 2013 - Current which was just announced today!

While I agree Apple's direction has changed. I'm not sure upper management see's clearly what is happening down in the trenches. Steve was an ultra micro manager, Tim is not. We had user groups and advocates which percolated issues & desires up, both are now gone. I had a chance quite a few times to meet up with Steve directly here in Boston at the BCS. Today the only way Tim gets intel is stats from the phone banks and emails. Even Jony Ive & company I think don't get good feedback. while the systems are selling the souring effect when someone doesn't realize they under bought after a few months I think is something they need to address. As only to find they need to buy a complete new system will push them away. Apple offers upgrades for phones why not for laptops!

The other factor here is what is pushing the revenue stream. While Mac sales are still inching up Vs the others. Apple has not really looked at who is their foundation customers needs are in both Desktop & Laptop space. I think the iPhone and iPad while important has blurred things here.

In their rush to make lighter sleeker desktop & laptop systems, the loss of expandability and what die hard pros need will be their down fall. I fact most poeple want to customized their system in one way or another.

Creating a Retina class 15" & 17" MacBook Pro system which has two or even four M.2 SSD bays as well as support larger memory for deep photo editing and CAD would be great! Sure I want a light weight system, but I want the deeper storage & RAM onboard and expandable.

They did manage to create a real Pro class box with the Mac Pro. It still needs work but it's a great start now lets make the real pro's MacBook Pro! Are you listening Apple ???
