Laggie/ black screen/ freezes

My phone seems to freeze on a black screen when its been sleep, also alot of programs show pop up that they are not responding. I have done a factory reset, I have also run virus scan. All have come back clean. Having to remove battery, and restart phone is getting old. Can someone tell me what is wrong with my phone? I know they dont last forever, but its only 2 years old.
