Why some cd's won't play at real widescreen

Some of my CD's which are "widescreen" won't play as widescreen, but rather appear in the center of the screen as a small version with wide black bars at the sides and top and bottom of the screen. I now have 5....read that again....5 CD's of "Crimson Tide", none of which will play on my computer in a "widescreen" format. What is the problem and what can be done about it? They play fine on a friends $39 Sony home CD player. Thanks for your help.
