I did some (actually heavy) Googling, and here's how I can answer my question now. Let's use metric units, as they can be more nuanced:

Weight of MacBook Pro 13-inch, 212 model: 2060g

Battery: 340g

Optical drive: 160g

Hard drive: 95g

SSD: 85g

Take out the hard drive, optical drive, and battery, insert the SSD and you get: 1550g. That is 30g lighter than the 1580g 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, including battery. Sounds reasonable!

The original specs indicate the weight of this is 4.5lbs. Subtract the weight of the individual components specified plus the weight of the SSD and you get about 1.37lbs total.

Original: 4.5

Battery : 2

Optical Drive: 1

Hard Drive: .57

+

SSD: .44

=

1.37 lbs

Interesting, Matt, however I'm still hesitant to press the 'Accept Answer' button. From where your number came from?

1.37 lbs is less than the iPad Pro for a unibody chassis, screen, keyboard, trackpad, SSD for the model MD101LL/A (2012), which I find highly unprobable (i'm just guessing here).

For a comparison, now I'm writing from a ThinkPad T400 (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T...) with the same setup (with SSD, battery and DVD removed), though it has different proportions, its still a monster, almost 3 times as heavy as your final number.

Can I ask a dumb question here. Why are we debating this? Are you trying the rationalize what makes one system better than the next?

da

It's a fair question @docbrown

I got the numbers using iFixit's internal weight data on the items. I had to use a best guess given a random optical drive, hard drive and SSD option without knowing the size of each. The battery is accurate though.

Matt, some questions aren't worth your time answering. Time is finite, use yours wisely.
