Laptop running fairly hot after few repairs

Quick backstory:

My laptop had a stick of RAM die so I upgrade my 2 x 4gb to 2 x 8gb. While I was at it I also upgraded my HDD to a SSD and replaced the Optical Drive with the old HDD.

It was all working great for the first month or so however recently (after also setting it up with Bootcamp) it seem to frequently have the fans running at full speed while using Google Chrome only.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on where to look in regards to fixing it up.

Thanks in advance!

Chrome is known to be resources hungry. I had the same heat problem once i've replaced the optical drive with a hdd. I think the heat from your old hdd is accumulating there. the solution for me was to take out the old hdd and use it like an external storage device. hope it helps for you

It sounds like you are still running things from the HD vs SSD. Double check your Startup Disk setting.

Generally, I don't like the dual drive setup on laptops as the primary drive SATA connection has crash guard protection for the HD, while the optical drive SATA port does not. In addition, in some models the optical drive SATA port has clocking issues which can mess up some drives. You may want to back off using the optical drive for your HD and instead use a FireWire external case to house the drive.

For the longest time I've recommended using a SSHD drive as the better solution on older MacBook Pro's. I still do but, I also think with the prices dropping on SSD's they are also a good deal on newer pre retina MacBook Pro's systems as well

Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for your help I will look at removing the hdd from the optical bay when I get a chance and see if that fixes the problem!

Although using it at the moment most of the heat is on the front left side whereas the optical bay is top right.

How big a SSD did you put in? Also how full is it?

It may be simple. Try opening it up, removing the fans and cleaning the fan vents: MacBook Pro 17" Unibody Right Fan Replacement
