Why is the "Check Engine" light sometimes on?

The "Check Engine" light is sometimes on my 2001 Toyota Corolla. We went to a lot of places to fix it but still it comes back.

Can someone help, i hope to fix it soon.

thanks

Update

My corolla is 2001 I had the codes run the other day. They said It is running lean and it also blows white smoke occasionally.. we have replaced the o2 sensor up front and number four coil as it suggested running better but still blowing smoke but mainly when first starting and when it warms up. what could be the problem? we also replaced leaking valve cover gasket. we have always kept oil in it.The car seems to run better since replacing #4 coil on plug. But we want to fix the lean mixture how is this done?

I've got the same problem with my Corolla. I've taken it to a number of places and they say it's a fuel pressure issue. One mechanic recommended getting a new gas cap, which I did. No change. At this point I'm considering just breaking the light bulb because the light is so annoying.

asdas, what error code did they give you?

Go to Autozone or any other major automotive parts store & ask them for a free OBD (On Board Diagnostics) Code reader check. Hook it up to the car, pull the codes & let us know. Some times you may have to drive with scanner attached if it is a intermittent problem. There may be a lot of things to suspect.

The check engine light can mean a variety of things. If it is not blinking it is typically related to the Emission Control Systems.

Take the car to an AutoZone, PepBoys, or any of the auto parts houses. They can plug the reader in and pull the code.

Typically it will mean;

- Gas Cap Loose

- O2 Sensors (Oxygen Sensor to determine how rich or lean the air fuel mixture is and whether the Catalytic Converter is doing it's job)

- MAS/MAF Sensor.

Anything can trigger it, it's best to have the code pulled and you can easily determine what the system is complaining about.

There is a very common problem with the Corolla that causes this.

It is a dirty MAF (MassAirflowSensor) and it can easily be cleaned.

There are several guides on the web, Google "Toyota corolla maf sensor". Expensive electronics cleaner is not needed, Isopropyl alchohol and a Q-tip will work fine.

You will need a scanner to reset the EngineCheckLight (Autozone or a friend) or I think it will automatically reset after about 40 times you start the car?

This is a 10minute repair. For some reason most professional mechanics do not know how to Google!

as regards fuel issue.

your fuel pump in the tank could be failing. never run the tank to the bottom. i've heatd of leakining injectors on these models. but right now i'm rebuiling a 2002 1.8 lit., corolla. cusomer just smoked it at 160,000. if the head was bad thats $390.00. if the engine core is unrebuildable than a used, 90 day garut., engine is no less than $1,100 , and then it's still a used engine. plkese rebuild your top -end at around 100,000 miles and rebalance. timing belts on time, and note to you mech. the tensioners fail prematurely,. go to 30,000 replase, not 60,000. and completely rotate out trans. fluid at 70,000 or more. some manufact. specs are wrong , torques wrong, factory quality contrl issues . go with your gut and still aplly old school rebuild ways.. we havn't had a rebuil return in 5 years.. My 2006 Diesel VW jetta occasionally has engine light problem. Took it to VW and received some suggestions from Wolfsburg to replace various wiring. Made my own determination that after a heavy rain, traversing puddles may cause engine light to turn on. When things dry out, light goes off.

For the first 12 years that I owned my Corolla, I never had Check Engine Light problems. Now I have the same problem intermittently. The Code is always the same and points to a problem in the emissions system. We replaced the gas cap and occasionally, I still have a problem. The light had not come on for many months. Then 2 weeks ago, it was glaring at me. My husband retightened the gas cap and the light went out about 50 miles later. I find this situation quite annoying. Since it has continued intermittently even with a new gas cap, I can't help but wonder if the problem lies elsewhere.

Hi,

I recently bought a second hand Toyota Duet. I drove 400 kms with no problem... and then suddenly I got the engine check light on. I got the fuel filter, and air filter changed as recommended. The problem went away only to return after a few days. when the check light came on, I could feel that I had to press really hard for acceleration as I could feel a drag more like as though air is entering the engine rather than fuel. BUT on doing so the check light would go off and then only return after sometime or days.

In the morning these day, I can smell petrol when I start the car and the smell fades away when I drive. I today got the engine check light on while driving again, so took the car to the service station. The check light went off when I reached the service station, so couldn't source the codes. Funny still that on being driven by the mechanics, the car never gets that engine check light on.... and now this is really irritating me.

My 2001 Corolla has been giving the same error. It seems that the technician cannot fix it as the error message changes. I have had many things changed on it. It is costing more than its worth. I think Toyota cars have this problem.

Guys, its the CHARCOAL CANNISTER or the evap sensor that connects the cannister to the throttle body. Octane is highly volatile. The Charcoal cannister traps the volatile octane from the fuel tank and lines and supplies that to the throttle body while the driving to maximise fuel efficiency. Clogged or blocked cannister or sensor that works intermittently is what causes the Engine check light to come on and it smells like gasoline in the car for a little while when the trapped volatile octane gas escapes under the hood rather than going into the throttle. Just clean the cannister with pressurized air. That shud clear out the dust in the cannister allowing more octane gas to get stored and smooth out the pathway.

at 10 years old almost all electric motors have to be replaced with brand new radiator motors ,fuel pump motor and since a transforming coil even though it has no ball barring's it has enamel on the inside windings that convert electricity to different voltage like the ignition coil and some relays electro magnetics.high temperature and more spark when opening and closing due to higher draw from electric motors.the motors always look fine but dust from the carbon brushes inside build up a short along with damage to enamel on wiring inside from sparks.to keep a car forever like i plan to do although to bad i did not know sooner, new OEM radiator fans first, new ignition coil set next and a new OEM fuel pump. The rest cleaning or replacing even the air conditioner electric motor shows high draw must be replaced.it's more inexpensive to buy only the same motor's and just change motor's if you got tools and skill.I love music in my car had to install Odyssey dry cell battery with model that has M letter in it it has a metal pan thing inside withstands high temperature more than 178 degrees installed a voltmeter wired to my cigarette lighter near my ash tray thank god now when i turn my key on i see volt of battery ,start car i see alternator volt ,run an electric feature see drop in voltage finding problems easy now.i might have saved my alternator before if i new the radiator fans draw more power when they get older than my engine starter. now i have to clean my catalytic converter almost 200,000 miles on ride very necessary .if i could go back in time i would have replaced only the electric motors of the radiator fans and the AC fan with OEM parts as for the window motors first time a piece of plastic breaks or they slow down must remove door panels clean off all old grease i use wd40 them put new grease and oils just about that 10 year mark of course i got time and money i would get to all this at 5 year mark my property gets over 140 degrees in the summer in the sun ,my driveway 156 degrees.
