iPod stuck on lock, what component should I replace?

My Ipod always has the small padlock in the top left hand corner. It doesn't matter where the hold switch is, off or on. The buttons are unresponsive and padlock is still there. Soft reset (menu + select) does not work. I was basically wondering if replacing the logic board will fix this because I want to be sure before I spend $50.

If the ipod is in lock the keys will not work i would replace the audio jack/hold button. I'm not sure where to buy the part but it should be one piece.

We sell the part on iFixit. Click the link to the right under the picture of the iPod that says "14 Parts". You can then browse parts by model (orange text, top right) and find the right part for your iPod.

Here is what I would do :) open the case (carefully and be patient it's a bear to open) follow the instructions on ifixit in how to open it. Now with the back open you will see the small circuit board that holds the headphone connector as well as the hold switch. remove this small circuit board.turn it over and you will see a small switch that engages the hold. iPod 4th Generation or Photo Headphone Jack Replacement step twelve shows it nicely. The switch has a small piece that is usually engaged in a notch on the hold slider which is on top of the back of the case. With the back separated, can you move the slider? Can you move the switch on slider on the circuit board? if yes to both, I bet that the case was opened and the notch in the slider not properly engaged with the switch. If you can not slide the switch on the circuit board then you most likely will have to replace that. Please be careful since any of these parts are small and do not require much force to break ( been there, done that :) ) I have not seen the part on ifixit but purchased one for myself of ebay.

Hope this helps and sorry for being so long winded, good luck.

Old Turkey, I have the same problem of an iPod Photo stuck on Hold. The switch is properly engaged with the slider. I also have another iPod Photo & I traded switches between the 2 & I still have the problem, so it isn't the switch. There has to be something else causing it. Any ideas?

after changing the battery i had the same problem - my ipod was stuck on lock. i kept it on lock, took it apart again and toggled the switch back and forth a few times. i kept it on lock, put it back together, switched it to unlock and then turned it on. it came on unlocked and is working normally now.
