Why is my USB port non-responsive?

The USB port of my Toshiba Satellite device does not recognize any device that is plugged into it. Some of the ports work, but I am having issues with one on the left hand side.

USB ports, and other external ports in general, accumulate quite a bit of dirt over time. Try cleaning the USB ports with a delicate utensil.
